Oh You who are beneficent, Lady of good omen, who fulfills all prayer! Provider of Refuge, Three-Eyed Goddess! Oh Gowri the Brilliant, Narayani, reverence to You!

- Devi Mahatmyam

Uma Gowri

Uma, Gowri, Devi, Parvati are all names given to the Mother Goddess in Hindu tradition.

Uma, in Sanskrit "light, splendor", Gowri "golden", are associated in homage to its aspects radiating generosity, compassion and knowledge.

These two names refer to the story that we can find in the Shiva Purana. This tells of the transformation of the young goddess Parvati, called at that time Uma. Her ardent desire to unite with her eternal husband Shiva pushes her to submit to a rigorous practice of meditation.

The Devi Purana says: 'She who was burned by the fire of yoga is born again from the Himalayas; as She has the color of conch, jasmine and the moon, She is called Gowri.' Thus we bear witness here to the transformation of a practicing woman who becomes filled with the light of Knowledge and united with her Beloved.
